Digging For More Keywords- BC Lesson #4

Now! By this time you should have a considerable list of keywords, but it is going to be imperative for us to define the quality of these keywords. The steps to follow is going to allow us to start formulating a primary list of the keywords we have already researched. We are going to refer to them as our Theme Keywords. I am going to ask you to take a moment to create an excel document similar to the one I am providing to you below.

Lets' stay Organized!

Lets' stay Organized!

This table is going to help us to keep organized through this process. Now that you have your spreadsheet ready, you are going to fill in the name of the main URL for your product. Next, got to Quantcast and plug in your products URL into the search bar. As you will see Quantcast will provide you with some very unique and helpful information.  First you want to look at the right side of the screen and make some notes on your spreadsheet regarding the demographic data that is provided. I do not know where they get there information, but we can use this information to guide us during  our promotion, especially when you can get a indication of who your audience is likely to be. Keep this data close at hand when you start formulating your content.

On the right hand you will also find some additional information that will be helpful. This information may vary depending on the popularity of your product. You will more than likely see a listing of other websites categorized under sites your “audience also visits”. What I would like you to do is copy and paste these URL’s into your spreadsheet under the Quantcast URL column. Now, go back to your Google AdWords account using Tools–>Keyword Tools and plug in the URL’s by website content provided by Quantcast and add any additional keywords to your original list. Before you start this step you may want scan your original list and eliminate any keywords that were added that looks like it is totally irrelevant to your product or what your website content will represent. As you go through each URL on your list and have added all the keywords, sort your list by “search volume” (highest–>lowest) and dig out the keywords that appear to be most relevant to your promotion with the highest levels of search volume. Copy and paste each of those terms into your spreadsheet under the Theme Keyword column. Conduct this action for each URL provided by Quantcast.

Your list may be getting very lengthy at this point, but there in one more step we can take to dig out more Theme keywords which is what we want. Google has a new tool that can assist us further. Go back to the Google AdWords tools link and goto the Google Insights link. This program will allow us to take the theme keywords we have identified thus far and dig out more theme keywords. Simply take your new list of theme keywords and plug them into the search bar. Create some criteria to filter out your search. I usually use the worldwide demographic,  for the last 12 months and filter out under all categories. (Your filter criteria may warrant adjustment based upon your promotion objectives).

Now Google insights will conduct searches on every theme keyword you enter and give some more very useful data. The information that appears below under “Top Searches” and “Rising Searches” can now be added as additional keyword terms to your theme keyword listing. Just copy and paste them all to your spreadsheet under Theme Keywords, and remember each additional keyword found using Google Insight should be added to your master list located in Google’s Adword tool. This will complete our theme keyword list.

Now will go back to Google Tools one more time. Select keyword tool and re-paste your last updated master keyword list on the right hand side of the screen. Now this time, instead of selecting by website content, select the top option of “Selective Word or Phrases” and uncheck the Synonyms box. Take each of your Theme Keywords and enter one by one to dig out any remaining keywords that have not been uncovered. Add these all to your master list and save as a text document.

I know you will be glad when this is over, but now we will see how this monster list will be broken down and filtered out.
